Another strong win for Kalandula at Doomben

Aug 22, 2015

Kalandula’s terrific winter campaign continued when the mare notched a comfortable win at Doomben.

Kalandula’s preparation has stretched over six months and 12 runs but turning five failed to stop the daughter of Commands producing another emphatic performance in the Delfina’s Bistro Handicap (1350m).

Jockey Glen Colless showed his class to quickly negate the tricky draw of barrier nine to have Kalandula travelling comfortably just beyond midfield, one horse off the fence, soon after the start.

Colless let Kalandula stride forward three and four wide from the 500m to have the smart galloper in touch with the leaders rounding the turn.

Kalandula sprinted well when asked early in the straight to join the leaders with 150m to run before holding the runner-up late to score by a neck but the margin could have been greater had Colless exerted more pressure on the winner.

Kalandula’s latest win was her seventh in 23 starts while the $41,600 winner’s cheque took her stakes tally to more than $160,000.

Hill paid $120,000 for Kalandula as a yearling before the mare increased her residual value with another city win.
