Startsmeup aiming at Warwick Stakes

Aug 13, 2011

The spring plans for Startsmeup will become clearer after contesting the Group 2 $175,000 Warwick Stakes (wfa, 1400m) at Warwick Farm on August 20.
Bruce is thinking possible tilts at the Epsom Handicap and/or a Toorak Handicap with the stable star who easily took care of a handy field at Doomben last start.
The Magic Millions runner-up has come back to racing better than ever and Bruce thinks there is a Group 1 win in the son of Danzero and Bluevein.
.The Warwick Stakes has traditionally been a great horse’s race with past winners including Bernborough, Tulloch, Kingston Town, Super Impose, Sunline and Lonhro among many greats.
“He is obviously in fine order and the Warwick Stakes will tell us exactly how far he has come,” Bruce said.
Startsmeup’s southern sojourn will be accompanied by Grafton Cup winner Warrior Within who will be aimed at a Victorian campaign later in the spring.
“Some of those country Cups look suitable, something like the Cranbourne Cup would be a good race for him,” said Bruce about the horse he has also cautiously nominated for the Caulfield Cup.
Bruce has decided to give recent Doomben winner Leapfrog a chance to join the duo.
“He has had problems with his legs all his life and I have had to maintain him, just look after him,” Bruce said.
“There are plenty of nice races around for him in Sydney and Melbourne.”
Bruce praised jockey Larry Cassidy for his ride on Leapfrog when he narrowly defeated Anyways and Age of Heroes in a tight finish last start.
“It was a 12 out of ten ride, no doubt about it, it won him the race.” Bruce said.
