Nothing weary about the 'Sleeper'

Mar 28, 2011

Improvement seems to the be the name of the game with each step Madame Sleeper takes,
On Saturday the three-year-old filly showed considerable improvement on her six previous efforts when she won the Class 1 (1200m) at the Gold Coast.
Starting at $6, after $10 was freely given, the daughter of Sequalo-Revenant (by Jetball) settled worst than midfield in a field of 10 but travelled sweetly throughout with early pace up front.
Jockey Dale Missen bided his time and brought Madame Sleeper to the outside at the 250m mark and she swept past rivals in impressive style.
Madame Sleeper defeated Taunt Pauline by 2-3/4l with Miss Burger, race favourite, easily beaten in third.
The In The Black Syndicate, headed by Wade McKibben, are now being rewarded for their patience and faith.
Madame Sleeper needed a 14 month lay-off due to a stifle operation after her initial start at Eagle Farm in October 2009.
The op wasn't cheap but Bruce's advise the Syndicate that she would win races.
The first of these came at the Gold Coast in February when she narrowly defeated the talented Product.
Though that win was good, her latest effort suggest a bright future.
"I had her (Madame Sleeper) also entered in town on Saturday," Bruce said.
"She had been working really well and I went to the races pretty confident she would run well.
"I think a mid-week in town might be the go next time out, but I will have a closer look at the calendar before deciding."
While Madame Sleeper is bred to be quick, Bruce is confident she will get over more ground.
"She certainly gives that indication and I might step her up at her next start."
"She had been unlucky in a couple of her races and her record could have been even better."

The Black Syndicate consists of six people with many from Tasmania.
