Sermon worth the move

Jan 31, 2011

The year 2010 was a bit of write off for Sermon.
The well bred stayer had 12 starts for no wins and its many owners in September thought a switch from Melbourne to Queensland was worth a crack.
On the advice of live-wire owner Vito Ulliana the other owners gave the horse to Bruce in an attempt to find form.
The signs early where good for the 2009 Cranbourne Cup winner when he finished strongly at his Queensland debut to finish second to Pelltro in an unsuitable sprint at the Sunshine Coast.
A winner from 1100m to 2400m Sermon has always been handy but the question remained was the best behind him?
His form suggested he was purely a wet tracker never having won on a good or fast track.
But Bruce thought the aging galloper wasn't that happy in the going anymore.
"Sometimes they just turn against them and it may be the case with Sermon," Bruce said.
After a decent run against Rightson at Eagle Farm on January 22 Sermon was set a task to front up four days later over 2200m at the same track.
"He went well in the Rightson race but they were a bit nippy over 1600m," Bruce said.
"He thrived after that run and I told Jim Byrne if he could have him up close and settled he would take beating."
Some 15 months after winning the Cranbourne Cup, Sermon ($6) settled outside the leader and impressively kicked clear to beat Drumshanbo by two lengths with Grieg a further short half head away third.
In doing so he broke his dry track duck.
"Now he is in form hopefully there are more wins on the way," Bruce said.
Congratulations to the owners who took a chance to venture north.
