CHESTNUT FILLY – Dylan Thomas – Bound.
The lure of one of the best female families in Australian racing enticed Bruce to pay $80,000 for lot 682 at the Magic Millions main sale in this month.
The chestnut filly by Dylan Thomas-Bound has a Group 1 pedigree and brings back fond memories to the experienced trainer.
The well balanced filly’s third dam was the brilliant mid-80s star filly Beach Gown who was trained by the late Geoff Murphy.
Bruce was Geoff’s travelling foreman at the time and was there when Beach Gown strung together five two-year-old wins before striking a wall of interference in the 1985 Blue Diamond when starting favourite.
All up the chestnut won seven races, two at Group 3 level but her brilliance didn't stop on the race track.
She produced two outstanding fillies (among six very good winners) in Wrap Around and Rose Of Danehill (Rose Of Danehill won the Group 2s - Blue Diamond Prelude, STC Reisling Slipper Trial, Edward Manifold Stakes, Kewney Stakes)
Wrap Around is granddam of Bruce's new purchase.
She had an electrifying sprint and won the Listed Bounding Away Quality at Caulfield at her two-year-old debut.
Though she missed the Blue Diamond, she like Beach Gown and Rose Of Danehill ran in the Golden Slipper.
Wrap Around strung together a hat-trick of wins as a three-year-old, the best of them the Group 3 Hilton on the Park at Flemington beating subsequent Group 1 winner Final Card.
The best of Wrap Around came as an older horse when she won the Group 1 MVRC William Reid Stakes defeating Storaia, Jakpil and Prince Salieri as well as the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes defeating Vain Sovereign, Street Ruffian and Joanne.
Wrap Around has also produced quality at stud with Intuit and Twist My Heart earning black type.
One of her daughters Attire was sent to the USA and won an average mile but on return produced Fashions Afield. Fashions Afield kept the family tradition by winning the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial. She also won the Group 1s - AJC Sires Produce, Flight Stakes (as a 3YO) as well as being runner-up in the 2005 Golden Slipper behind Stratum.
Fashions Afield won six races all up and $1.9m.
Bound (by Royal Academy) is the dam of Lot 682 and was in the hands David Hayes but remained unraced.
Bound unfortunately died in October and this filly is just her second foal.
This yearling’s sire Dylan Thomas won twice as a two-year-old and went on to be one of the best horses in the world.
He won 10 races from 1400m to 2400m including six Group 1 events and never missed a place in 15 starts.
He won the 2007 Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix Ganay as an older horse.
He also won the Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes as a three-year-old.
His oldest progeny are yearlings.
Dylan Thomas was 2007 European Horse of the Year.
Beach Gown was Australian third top 2YO filly in 1984-1985.
Rose Of Danehill was Australian joint second top 2YO filly in 1996-1997.
Fashions Afield was Australian champion 2YO filly in 2005-2006.
Bruce is excited by the prospects of this filly and hopes to be back on Magic Millions race day next year to win a big one.
His horses are getting closer.
2009 Motown Lady finished third in the $1m MM 2yo classic.
2010 Startsmeup finished an unlucky fifth in the $2m MM Classic.
2011 Startsmeup finished second in the $1m MM Guineas.
