Warringah - Never too late to win.

What a difference a year makes.

Warringah, the villain of last year's Melbourne Cup turned hero at Eagle Farm yesterday.

Heavily supported in to $3.10 the six-year-old bolted-in in a manner its owners hoped 12 month earlier.

Last year the pommie import with all the hype had Damien Oliver aboard but didnt give a yelp after leading the Cup field.

Well beaten before the home turn, he finished 49.7 lengths last behind Shocking.

The only ones who collected were those with the dud in the office sweep.

Bought by Australian interests, Warringah joined Chris Waller's Sydney yard but things didn't improve.

He had five starts for Waller and failed to place.

Waller stabled horses at Bruce Hills Ascot Lodge during the winter carnival and sent him Warringah in September to "get his confidence back."

And yesterday a year after the disgrace the move paid off.

Warringah worked hard to settle outside the leader after being caught wide for the initial 1000m.

At the home turn he gave rivals the slip and powered home to win the Lexus Plate by four and half lengths from Eleven Oysters with More More More another 3/4 lengths away third.

It was his fifth run for Hill - his first win and two placings.

"He had been working well and looking for a dry track," said Hill.

"That was a very good win as he worked hard after his barrier stall didn't open 100% correctly.

"His three wins have been around 2400m now and he was very strong at the end of it.

"He is just on loan with me, Chris can ring at any time and take him back."
