Getting married is a gamble, so is being a jockey and for that matter, so is life.

Therefore, it was no surprise when jockey Paul Hammersley tied the knot with Rebecca Hill in Las Vegas on May 9.

Even their date of marriage was a lottery.

"I had promised Bec that the next time I get suspended we would take off to Vegas and get married," Hammersley said.

That opportunity came when Hammersley pleaded guilty to causing interference on Asciano at Ipswich and then sweetly copped an eight meeting suspension.

The couple, who have been an inseparable item for three years, married in one of the plush Paris Hotel chapels.

The Hammersleys gave the Elvis celebrant a miss and went for a more traditional guy.

"We have known each other for eight years. She is the love of my life," said Hammersley who also celebrates his 26th birthday today.

Rebecca is daughter of top Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill.

"Paul is my best friend, we are at our best when together - we make a great team," she said.

Hammersley will ride Hill’s duo Startsmeup and Warrior Within at Doomben today.

Startsmeup goes into the Group 2 $151,000 Champagne Classic 1200m first-up after trouncing opponents in a trial at Eagle Farm on Tuesday.

"He has come back from a spell a lot stronger, thickened out and we are hoping for big things today and in the future," Hammersley said.

Startsmeup, from barrier 15, was the unlucky runner in the Magic Millions Classic won by Military Rose.

Most agree he should have finished second not fifth given a better alley.

"Startsmeup needs a dry track while Warrior Within (in Lord Mayor's Cup) would be better in the wet," Hammersley said.

The hoop has also picked up rides on Mr Hornblower and Fangles through new manager Ray Sexton.

At the Vegas tables the newly weds broke even – but in life they kicked a major goal.
