Vodissa - too smart
May 14, 2010
Recent stable addition Vodissa struck early success when strong backed at Murwillumbah last Sunday.
The beautifully bred mare arrived from Adelaide earlier this year and it has taken only two starts with Bruce for owner to get a return.
The Encosta De Lago-Carmenesque (by Scenic) chestnut was backed from $8 to $3.80 fav on track (admittedly the ring isn't big).
The money was right.
Drawn perfectly in barrier one, rider Luke Rolls push Vodissa hard early to gain a sit behind the leader before pulling her to the middle of the track in the straight.
The five year old heldoff the late challengers Bentley Blue and Baby Rock to scored just her second win in 20 starts.
"I think she can get over a bit more distance," Bruce predicts.
"While she ran some good races in Melbourne and Adelaide she didn't win a lot and the aim is to get a couple more up before she goes to stud."
Vodissa is a half sister to Listed Chester Manifold winner Umaquest, the David Hayes trained galloper who won four races.
Other winners from Carmenesque are Iron Liege (three wins), Don Jose (one win in seven starts).
Carmenesque, herself won seven races all in at metros in Melbourne in the late 90's.
Vodissa's two wins have come on rain affected tracks.
Encosta de Lago is currently the leading Australian sire.
Encosta de Lago's daughters havew thrown 77 winners to date including stakewinners Musir, Stokehouse, Beneteau, She's Got Gears.
