Spinelli - with the never say die attitude

Jan 23, 2010

Luck in racing plays its roll no doubt.

Owner and racing enthusiast Glen Heran wished he had a bit more of it a couple of weeks ago when
Startsmeup had its Magic Millions chances ruined when it drew barrier 19 in the classic.

But in racing the battles continue and small victories one day could prove significant.

Heran's Spinelli claimed a Class 1 (1400m) event at the Gold Coast today when she refused to give up the fight and necked out Tread Lightly.

Replacement rider Alan Chau (Ashley Butler fell previous race) rode her well, just off the pace before coming with a well timed run.

The win was the Spinning World-Laune (Kenmare) filly's second win at her 13th start, the other also being at the Gold Coast in August.

Bruce says "Spinelli is small but tough and looks like she will get over more ground."

Heran, a builder by profession, has about 20 horses and a horse property in Maudsland.

"We (with brother Marty) hope to one day step up the property and have a good band of broodmares where we can race, breed and sell," Heran said.

Broodmares are not the only possibility for the Herans who recently had Bruce purchase the Redoute's Choice-Purple Groove colt at the Gold Coast MM sale for $300,000.

"Maybe it will make at stallion one day but I know that sort of dream is remote and a long way off."

Heran bought Spinelli for $44,000 at the June Weanling Magic Millions sale in 2007 "just on type."

Her dam Laune won two races in England and is a half sister to Hockney (by Quest For Fame) the AJC Expressway Group 2 winner of six races.

Laune is the dam of five to race and four winners. They are Launfal in Hong Kong, Azure in New Zealand, Octennial in England, Spinelli and Killarney who was the placegetter in England.

"I'm not sure whether we will send Spinelli to stud this year or next year but hopefully she can add to the wins which then looks better in the catalogue," Heran said.

"We had her in a $70,000 race in town but that was beyond her and we hope she can now go through the classes.''
